Built in 1893 by renowned English architect Ernest Coxhead as the summer home of the Whittel family in Alameda’s Gold Coast neighborhood, this early Arts & Crafts style home retains all the features that set it apart as a distinctive addition to Gold Coast architecture. Retained by the current owners for a remodel to serve a modern day family, design plans include: adding a master bathroom, a complete renovation of the kitchen, turning the first-floor powder room into a full bath, adding a 3rd floor dormer office space and another bedroom. In addition to careful attention to historic preservation, our approach with this and every project included early conversations with builders to embed cost-control approaches in the design process.
