Tomales Regional History Center

PROJECT LOCATION:
Tomales, CA

SCOPE:
Adaptive reuse of school gym and auditorium to a history center

KEY FEATURES:
Preservation of historic features
Green finishes

We remodeled this 1921 building to serve the new use of the Tomales Regional History Center. Formerly the Tomales High School gymnasium and auditorium, decades of graduations and proms, basketball games and school assemblies were held here before the school moved to a new site. With this adaptive reuse, the rows of double-hung windows, the original fir floor and tongue-in-grove wall paneling and the stage were preserved. The roof is supported by exposed trusses from which hang the original light fixtures. A new bathroom, ADA entry, and finishes brought this light-filled space back to life for this history center whose region of interest parallels the original Tomales High School district.
